I like the idea of using the magnets. Another option is to glue a circle of 1" foam insulation to the cut can bottom or top, just big enough to fit snugly inside the can. Use the open end of the can against the foam and twist to score the outer surface of the foam. Then use a sharp knife to cut the rest of the way through. If the can has a sharp enough edge you will be able to use the can as the "knife".
